What is a Chicago Greystone?
You’ve probably seen them in Chicago, but greystones have been a part of the city for generations. First built beginning in the late 1800s and early 1900s, many of the original greystones went up in Chicago’s North Lawndale neighborhood.
The stone to build them was locally sourced and took on the name greystone based on its hue. Usually, greystones in Chicago contained at least two flats, and they were two or even three-stories high.
They were mostly sold in the beginning to working class and middle class buyers. The first greystones were built in a Romanesque style with distinctive arches. Later Chicago greystone designs had a Neoclassical appearance, with columns and smooth limestone blocks.
To this day, around 1,700 greystone buildings still exist in the North Lawndale neighborhood. While some streets in the city are entirely filled with greystones, others may offer just one of two greystones.
